One business…one happy…at the gate to New Zealand – I am sitting at the gate in LA waiting to board and my computer is having issues. Anyways…I’m at the gate and board in about an hour! The crazy off on my own for 10ish days is about to begin 🙂 It’s scary, but also exciting 🙂

The Lorax

I had the chance to watch the Lorax while I was in LA and I really enjoyed it. In once sense it has an environmental message that is rather over-the-top – but sometimes we refuse to acknowledge issues that are right in front of us until we are slapped in the face with what could be.

Truly great art is a lie that allows you to see the truth –

My paraphrase of a quote often attributed to Pablo Picasso

I believe that this movie is filled with a few timeless truths that we would all be wise to recognize. Firstly, we really do have a consumer problem in America – Secondly the movie really keys in on personal responsibility – The Lorax leaves behind the word “unless” – the world will be the same as always…unless…unless we make something better of it….unless we dare to change ourselves and run relentlessly after Christ giving up all other things for the sake of life in Christ. Dr. Suess “unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it’s not.” There is a very similar picture in Lord of the Rings with Frodo looks into Galadriel’s mirror – He sees all sorts of horrible things…that will happen unless he finds a way to complete his quest. Far too often we see a task that seems impossible and give up rather than jumping in head first to tackle as much of it as we possibly can.

Finally – the OnceLer gives the main character the final Truffula tree seed – but the main character doesn’t see how it could make any difference. The OnceLer has this great quote – “It’s not what it is, but what it can become, just like a boy.” Too often we see people that are down and out – we, I, write them off as hopeless or not worth the effort.

If Christ would have had the same attitude there wouldn’t be many Christians – I am that down and out from his perspective – but he doesn’t see how miserably I fail at life: he sees what I could be/do with his loving arms wrapped around me.

I think it’s time that we change how we look at the people around us.

Hey everyone! I arrived safely in Los Angeles and have had a good 3 days with my cousin and her husband. I have definitely enjoyed the beautiful weather (averages 60-80 F all year around where they live).

I had the chance to rest, enjoy museums, and make the first 3 hours of the 7 hour time change between Ohio and New Zealand. I especially enjoyed getting out and running and walking around the Marina near their house. It was warm and sunny with a beautiful cool ocean breeze – otherwise known as perfect weather 🙂

I’ll leave you with a running quote for Eric Liddell – a famous World War II era runner and missionary. “I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure.”

So it begins….I leave today for the beginning of my trip! It’s hard to tell exactly where the path will lead – I appreciate your willingness to walk it with me from afar and greatly appreciate your prayers!

Stage 1 – fly out to Los Angeles and spend a few days with a cousin in route to New Zealand.

…and seeing as how I just finished the Hobbit and will be reading the Lord of the Rings while I’m gone I couldn’t resist the opportunity for a great quote 🙂

“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” The estimable Bilbo Baggins.

The Perils of Judgement

Gandalf

I was watching The Fellowship of the Ring today for the first time in a long time and Gandolf has this great line – “Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends.”

Too often I act as Judge, Jury, and executioner – deciding cases on very incomplete evidence. It’s time that I learned to leave the judging to Christ and get on with the job he gave me – following him.

The Beginning #1

Origami Yoda

Think well one must before you can write well – says origami yoda 🙂

Hey guys this is the beginning of my blog – with the primary purpose of chronicling my time in New Zealand with YWAM…but also just as an outlet to process life and think through the world we live in by writing.

I always used to hate writing – but eventually as I became more proficient I realized that the process of writing/editing/rewriting was when I did my best thinking – and when I did my best thinking was when I got excited about life and what God has in store for us.

That’s all I’ve got at the moment!

Thanks for reading.
